FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Boyce's classroom raised $353
This project is fully funded
I teach a special education classroom. The children in my classroom have emotional or behavior disabilities and many of them have learning disabilities too. Children with emotional and behavior disabilities have average or above average disabilities, but learning is difficult for them. The children have very low self-esteem and are not very motivated to learn. We are a poverty level school and are suffering from extreme budget cuts this year.
I have recently discovered that I am able to hook my students during reading when we study word families. The children catch on to the lesson and are able to read with success. I am very limited with word family supplies. It is so hard to help my children stay focused, try new things and complete tasks independently. Reading words in word families is a task they can complete successfully and with their success they begin to work independently.
I have found a variety of word family materials that will help me develop a program to use word families to help teach reading by focusing on word families. The word family magnets center can be used in whole group instruction as well as independent practice. The word family flip books, word pattern practice cards, picture wheels and sliders sets can be used individually to practice new families and review mastered families. Independent practice is important because it develops self-confidence and independence. When children are able to work independently I am able to work with those students who are struggling or working at a different academic level. Finally the word family readers give students an opportunity to apply their knowledge of word families. The students can read and reread books for practice and mastery of reading skills.
I am so thankful for the help I have gotten from Donor's Choose. I know I have a needy class this year academically as well as emotionally. I know the materials I have asked for will be a wonderful resource for my students and my classroom. Please help me provide for these children who need so much. Thank you.
