This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a school social worker. I work at a high school and support the tenth and eleventh grades. I provide mandated and proactive counseling sessions. Our school is very diverse. We have students from Russia, Poland, Middle East, Latin America, Caribbean, Migrants and American children. Mental health and SEL is very important at our school. In 2017, a student ended his life. Since then, our principal has had us implement programs he purchased and interventions to support our students' emotional well being. Our high school students struggle with intense anxiety, panic attacks and managing their emotions. They faced these challenges before the pandemic. However, as we returned to the physical space of the school building, we quickly realized how our students' mental health had been impacted. The items I have selected will help them manage their emotions and in turn, support their academic growth and progress. Some of our students live in temporary housing or foster care. Their challenges are different in the way that they have experienced trauma. Although they have a lot of supports in place outside of the school community; we still provide support and resources for them in the school. As the Students in Temporary Housing Liaison, I order hygiene items, clothes, toiletries and school supplies to help them feel prepared and included. However, we can cannot use those funds to purchase food or snacks. The snack items on my wishlist will ensure they are getting something to eat throughout their school day. I have purchased snacks in the past, but could not keep up with it as it became costly. I have created this wishlist in hopes of providing some of the pertinent items to support my student's physical, emotional and overall well being, will ensure their success.
