My Students
The students are located in Brighton Beach Brooklyn. The community the children reside, sadly was affected by hurricane Sandy in 2012 and although some of the students were small then, they are still suffering from the aftermath from this horrific event. Due to the fact that most of the parents of our students are immigrants with very little education, they struggle finding high paying jobs and simply can not afford to provide the daily necessities required to maintain a proper hygiene for their children. Our students are seen wearing the same clothes daily, year after year. They suffer from lice and bed bugs, poor dental awareness and malnutrition.
The students proudly call our school their home and prefer to be here even when we are closed!
They love the environment that we have created for them, where they feel safe, and most importantly they are so eager and willing to learn. They are the first generation in their families that learn or improve English and will achieve the American Dream. I feel so inspired when I am with the students because they remain so motivated to learn and they become "little teachers" when they go home and involve their parents.
My Project
Currently, our school is under construction. Our school gym is unavailable for several months. I will be traveling and providing physical education and heath education (for the first time) with in the classroom. I will be teaching grades k-5. If I had the CD's that assist with movement and music will really assist with making the physical education time in the classroom a lot more fun, then when we finally get into the Gym, it will assist with many fun activities and games.
In addition, having multiple materials such as the books about health and wellness for every grade will make learning about nutrition and wellness easier and more enjoyable, since we don't have any updated materials.
Furthermore, it will assist the students with learning in other subject areas as well as reading, science and math.
