Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Now that we are nearing the last few months of school, students have shared how stressful they are with exams, upcoming high school requirements, graduation. They have expressed the need for a space to calm down. My students came up with the idea of a sensory room, not just for themselves but to support the other students within their school, as well as the community which uses the school. The goal is to have a designated location with difference sensory item to give a space to mediate and my upper grade students to mentor and help the lower grade students.

My students want to create a space that will provide the students in the school as well as the children in their community with a safe and calming environment to destress.

The school serves not only our students but also local schools and community programs, including church activities on weekends. In addition, the school is open to the community to access the laundry room as well as a well stocked pantry. A sensory room for the community would be a great addition to an already amazing but underprivileged community.

My students have been part of a program at school that mentors the younger grades. The idea came from them, as to establish a place where they can mentor the younger through a scheduled sessions. By establishing this sensory room, my students can aim to offer a welcoming area for individuals in the community to gather, and promote wellness.

I am seeking materials such as stuffed animals and fidget toys, which will significantly enhance this space and promote mental well-being for everyone involved. My goal for this project is to equip students with tools that promote wellness and extend these practices within our community.
