This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Between AP classes, sports practices, and chaotic home-lives, today's students are busier--and more stressed out--than ever before. Post-Covid, students have been hesitant to interact with others, volunteer, share their feelings, and have had great difficulty in expressing themselves in healthy ways. The kids are struggling in mind and body!

As teachers, we see firsthand the effects of stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues on their ability to learn, engage, and thrive at school.

Unfortunately, after buying pencils, paper, snacks, and other necessities, there is nothing left to provide students with opportunities to express themselves and relax their brains. With your help and generosity, I plan on carving time out of the week so that each of my periods has a moment to reflect, talk peer to peer, and create something tangible in a relaxing environment.

I am asking for help in procuring a printer, so that students can finally print their digital art albums that we make in class. Their art will then be hung on the wall in a beautiful student created mural. I am asking for art supplies such as paint, create your own puzzles, coloring books, brushes, and canvases, so that students can take a moment to express their stress and anxiety in a positive manner. We are asking for origami paper so kids can have the opportunity to reduce stress, improve hand-eye coordination, boost creativity, and to practice patience and persistence. We are also requesting card games specifically designed to encourage mindfulness, interconnectedness between peer groups, and to target the root causes of stress and anxiety in teens. Other items, such as Kanoodle, basketball, volleyball and create your own keychains will give students the opportunity to compete in a low stress environment and give them something to take home that they can be proud of.
