My Students

MLK students come to the library every week to check out books. Many favorite authors and series and the first and second grade level are incomplete. Some favorites have been "loved to death," as they go out week after week until the library volunteers can't tape and glue them together anymore.

Our students struggle with unacceptably low reading levels, however when they come to the library, they are enthusiastic about engaging their curiosity, creativity and sense of humor.

Thus, popular authors and series tend to assist them in selecting books they have enjoyed with their friends in previous visits.

My Project

Students come to the library requesting their favorite authors and series, but find we do not have them in the library. Disappointing students who want to read, but week after week, hear the words "we don't have the book," is difficult. Funding this project will allow us to purchase books such as "Tiny Titans," "Big Nate," "Ivy and Bean," and a few of the "Captain Underpants" books. The outcome will be increased books read and discussed by our students.

Reading at the 1st and 2nd grade level is fundamental for future learning.

Having the "right" books to engage students at levels they can digest and improve their reading will be critical for future learning challenges.
