Welcoming Newcomer Students into a Positive Environment

My Project

As a Newcomer Social Worker at Skyline High School, I provide clinical case management to students who have recently arrived to the country and speak a language other than English. The majority of my students speak Spanish and come from countries such as Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

Newcomer students face multiple challenges including navigating new systems, learning a new language and many are here without their family.

My office is located next to the Newcomer classrooms so students have easy access to request support. Students come to me through out the day with various needs whether it be applying for benefits, looking for a job, or for social emotional support. By providing a welcoming space, students are able to get the support they need and can return to the classroom ready to learn.

One of the main barriers my students face is lack of access to basic needs and food insecurity is a large barrier. Being able to provide healthy snacks through out the day is essential for my students so they can continue to learn and achieve their goals. My students also need access to mental health support to help overcome many challenges in their life. Things like art supplies, fidget toys, and a calming space with a new rug will provide the much needed support my students need to feel welcomed and ready to start the year strong!
