My Students

I teach in a low income area in southern California, with students who are amazing people. They just need a chance and some encouragement.

Our differences don't matter, as we are all building each other up.

The uniqueness of each student plays an important role in our classroom. I've discovered that some of my most difficult students are the ones who have a lack of confidence in themselves. I have a few students who have difficulties in other classrooms, but in my classroom are shining examples. A particular student recently wowed me with his abilities in a certain math area. This same student is known for less than perfect behavior and for a negative attitude. However, as soon as I saw their abilities in this area, I built them up by assigning them 5 other students to assist in the mastering of the concept. I walked around observing the different group work through-out the classroom and was amazed, because all of the students working in this area with the student were so focused on the task at hand.

My Project

I became a teacher to create a safe place for children. Sadly for many children, school is the only place where they feel safe. I continually am working on creating a warm environment for students to work collaboratively on their math and science tasks. It is not a rare thing for a student to volunteer, make a mistake, and then there are suddenly 4 other students rallying around that student and helping them through their mistake.

My goal for my classroom is to create a warm and inviting place where all my students can feel safe and know they are loved.

My students feel welcomed by myself and by the other students, now my goal is to make the classroom itself a place that reflects that warm and inviting feeling with this rug and bean bag chairs. These students come from many different home situations and I want all of them to feel that my classroom is a second home for ALL of them. No matter what needs they may have.
