Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach Pre-Kindergarten. I think that Pre-K is a unique, very fantastic grade level. My youngest student is 3.9 years old, and my oldest is 4.9 years old! My children come from very low income homes. My kids speak many languages: Arabic, Bengali, Spanish, and English. We are part of NYC Mayor Mike DeBlasio's Pre-K initiative. This initiative guarantees that every four-year-old in New York City will have access to this life-changing educational opportunity, with roughly 70,000 children expected to enroll. It seems to be a great success. I am proud to be part of it. It has indeed provided my Pre-K students with a special, unforgettable opportunity to increase language skills, cognitive skills, and socio-emotional skills. It is amazing to see these children grow.

My Project

I am requesting issues of My Big World by Scholastic for my students. These colorful, engaging and delightful magazines are made for my Pre-K students. Twice a month, each child in my class will get their very own early-learning magazine. We read and study the pictures of the magazine together, as a class. The theme of the magazine reflects the season that we are experiencing. For instance, with bright photos and descriptive text, the magazine might describe apples, going to school, making friends, and sharing in the fall. And there is always an age appropriate, skill building activity on the back of the magazine. Then, the children bring home the magazine that we read in school to share with their families. My Big World comes with internet activities that can be viewed and played as a class on the SmartBoard too! Our annual subscription to My Big World and its support materials build children's content knowledge, vocabulary, language and social skills, readying them for kindergarten and beyond.
