My Students

Reluctant readers can be turned into vigorous book worms once the doors of reading are opened to them. I am trying to provide a diverse array of 18 texts that can hold my diverse group of kids attention. Any help would be enormously appreciated.

I teach 130 ninth graders in the Bronx, NY.

New to a school of six campuses and over 5000 students many of them have described themselves as feeling overwhelmed. But in the class when they are told to read almost all of them bury themselves in the protective layer a book. All have expressed interest in reading...and a few said they like to write. I want to keep the reading exciting and inspire the writing even more with ideas sparked from other writers. P.S. Since I did summer school also I always have upper class man coming to my room to borrow books. So the books will help more than just my students

My Project

Students are currently losing themselves in their independent reading books. But soon I will be out of new fresh material for them to dive into. Many do not have the luxury of income to go pick out a book from the bookstore and others have too many obligations to fulfill to even think about traveling to the library. With my own class library I can keep the literature constantly fresh and continue to show them multiple ways to dive into their texts.

English language arts (ELA) is about more than reading and writing.

It is the world of ideas, literacy and critical thought. It is learning from another persons experience, imagination or arguments. It is the basis of all complex thought. But in order for students to really grasp the depth of the subject their must be as many different resources as there are personalities. Please help me keep them turning the pages and expanding their minds. Thanks in advance...and thanks for your time.
