Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class contains students with special needs who are eager to learn and absorb knowledge. They come in with beautiful questions about the world, but few resources to match their needs. Many want to read in order to gain more knowledge, but have not yet been drawn into the wonderful world of books.

Imagine a regular Bronx high school, with students traveling from class to class with books and backpacks.

Now add to their gear a suitcase with a violin, or a wheeling cart with a trombone. My school contains a population of extremely talented and ethnically diverse students who treat their music as seriously as their academic subjects. Although they have the extra responsibility of music classes, they also have to keep up with their regular academics. I teach a group of students with special needs who can express themselves beautifully on their instrument or voice, but are still struggling to "find their voice" when it comes to reading. Many of them have not found "that book" that gets them excited about reading, and some of them have such a hard time with reading that they attempt to read a book, but after struggling for so long they say "this is too hard" and feel dejected.

My Project

Remember the last book you read? Remember an entire other world being opened to you? Many of my IEP students have not discovered those worlds yet. Many think that "reading is boring" and that "there are no books I like," or "these books are hard" and "I don't understand what I'm reading." With these materials, I can create a library for my IEP students that will allow them to borrow books so that they can share in the joy of reading; entire new worlds can be opened up to them. Because there will be two copies of most books, two students can even borrow the same book and create a mini book club! The books will give them multiple options to expand their literacy skills which will expand their minds and increase their reading levels.

In every generation, books are used to tell stories, share information, and to entertain.

With these books, my IEP students can discover the joy of reading and learn more about the world than they could ever imagine. My students will also increase their literacy skills. With the development of the common core standards, literacy is becoming even more integral to every subject. Expanding the books available to them will allow them to enjoy engaging books while increasing their literacy levels
