My Students

I teach a very large student body at my school (nearly 1000 students). I gratefully serve as their full time, enthusiastic music specialist where I strive daily to provide opportunities to apply and explore academia through the incredibly immense lens of musical experience. My students are comprised of a diverse and eclectic mix of cultures and socioeconomic classes spanning K-6th grades and all stages of academic achievement. They stand as a beautiful celebration of the human spirit and diversity! Henry Matisse once said, "Creativity takes courage." In my classes that is most certainly the case!

Music provides me with wonderful opportunities to help my students develop a healthy sense of self and community through creatively integrated experiences that enhance their ability to learn and grow socially and academically.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 has caused significant lapses in academic and social development for some students in our school. Previously positive social connections have, in some instances, digressed, and negative behaviors are becoming more pronounced. Gaps in learning have also caused discouragement and frustration across the board and dedicated teachers are reaching out for help more than ever before.

My Project

Xylophones are an extremely versatile instrument. Students love them as a solo or accompanying instrument and they provide oodles of opportunity for academic integration and social-emotional learning for all ages. This year, teachers are constantly playing academic "catch up" because of COVID-19 and they are reaching out to get my help with academic subject support and behavior help more than ever before.

Because xylophones are so enticing, they enhance any creative pathway developed to spur academic or social emotional growth necessary because of negative COVID-19 impacts.

One particular teacher request this year has me very excited.

I have been asked to spend more time teaching fourth grade students about the indigenous peoples of Utah and their cultures. In my classroom, we've explored native culture with instruments, voice, and movement, however, I recently created some musical arrangements that include xylophones and wrist bells to elevate the learning experience. I also plan to perform those pieces outside of class. One of the pieces I've arranged explores the connection between indigenous peoples and nature with the help of music authorized for school use by the Northwestern Shoshone.(See third grade USBE Standard 1, objective 3, d and Music Standard 3.M.P.5) Another of the songs I've arranged highlights dinosaur species native to Utah for valuable science integration and an opportunity to "sum up" our creative study of extinct animals. (See USBE science standard 4.1.3 and Music Standard 4.M.P.11) Who wouldn't be excited for this wonderful opportunity? Please help me!
