Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a team of dedicated athletes in NYC and one of the only high school cheer programs in Manhattan, NYC. We welcome a diverse group of individuals from the campus community. Our primary responsibility is to increase prosocial behavior and school culture by supporting the school's varsity basketball team in the fall, hosting school based events, participating in local competitions, and promoting positive school spirit. Most of our athletes are joining us for the FIRST time, never having cheered before and returning to their school building for the first time in-person since COVID!

As collective groups, we seek to engage in building responsibility, collaborative creativity, meeting/exceeding academic and behavior expectations, being role models for healthy choices, challenge each other to use positive ways to problem solve and seek to empower others to do the same in our community.

Cheerleading is not recognized as a sport in NYC and as a result, does not receive any athletic school based designated funding. So we need your help in order to continue to serve our young athletes. By participating in our program, young people have an opportunity to develop their social emotional skills and leadership through non-traditional sports and movement.

My Project

Our current athletes join a legacy of other cheerleaders that have come before them from their high school campus. They continue the legacy of supporting a positive school culture, spirit, pride and leadership. Our team continues to inspire and motivate young people to be engaged in academics, school community, service and leadership. Uniform costs are typically out of reach for our athletes and their families! With COVID having added additional financial strains on families, we are asking for your help to unite us through our Cheer look!

As spirit leaders and ambassadors at our school, it is important we represent our school with pride.

We want people to be able to see us in school and in our communities and recognize us as the Seward Park Bears. When we go into the community or host games/school events, we stand out amongst the rest. Younger people see our team and say "I want to be a cheerleader!" With the help from our community, we can be confident in our appearance with our new uniforms and continue to inspire those around us.
