My Students

Third grade is the time where children begin "reading to learn". Many science and social studies standards, as well as current events, are covered in Weekly Reader and Time for Kids magazines. In the past, children learned about these topics through textbooks; nonfiction magazines adds novelty.

My students usually come to me reading below grade level.

It is very hard to get them to enjoy reading. According to an article I read, "People don't really understand the nature of reading. They feel that reading is a skill, that it's transferable, so once you're a good reader, you can read anything that's put in front of you," says Daniel Willingham, a University of Virginia cognitive psychologist who focuses on K-12 education. "But that's only true for decoding—what you learn until grade three or four. After that, when you see good readers versus poor readers, what you're looking at is mostly differences in the knowledge that kids bring to the reading. It's easy to read something when you already know something about the topic. And if you don't know about the topic, it's utterly opaque to you." The article goes on to say that reading magazines and many nonfiction books enhances a child's background knowledge which aids in their reading comprehension throughout their life.

My Project

I have used Weekly Reader in my classroom for three years. The kids can barely wait until Friday, when we read them together. I love seeing them so excited about reading. Weekly Reader and Time for Kids have tons of wonderful resources for teachers as well. Each magazine has reading comprehension questions and map skill practice. I honestly believe having Weekly Readers and Time for Kids in my classroom has helped my students each year be advanced or proficient on the state tests.

My students come to me with VERY little background knowledge about the world (current events, science, cultures, etc...) Weekly Reader and Time for Kids magazines opens their eyes to the world that they might never get to see in real life.
