Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Please support my kindergrtners in learning to read! I teach inner city kindergartners in New York where approximately 80% of the students receive free lunch. This is a high need community that would greatly appreciate your support in funding this proposal.

One of my goals is to pass on my love of learning to my students. I believe that if we nurture their curiosity early on we can begin to spark that interest and motivation that children need in order to successfully continue their academic endeavors. My students are very enthusiastic and they are eager to learn to read. Unfortunately, our school does not have enough non-fiction literature for my students to learn to read on their reading level. Fortunately, the Weekly Reader magazine offers fun activities with colorful pictures and easy to read text that kindergarten children can use to learn to read. The magazine provides practice in developing early literacy skills. This is what makes the difference between an eager reader and a reluctant reader, and I want all my students to have positive reading experiences so that they remain eager readers.

I have found that the Weekly Reader magazine is an invaluable resource. It serves as complimentary material to our units of study. The magazine covers topics that are aligned with the same topics that I teach in the classroom and are also aligned to the state's standards for learning. I will need 25 copies of the magazine and this will cover a year's worth of weekly issues. I have used this magazine before and my students love it and they learn to read with it independently. It is truly amazing!

I assure you that by funding this project you will have made a difference in the education of these inner city children and thus will help to narrow the achievement gap. Studies show that the earlier children gain literacy skills, the more likely they are to become strong readers and lifelong learners. This magazine helps them gain the skills they need at their grade level, and with your support my students will be well on their way to a lifetime of learning and academic accomplishments. I invite you to fund this project and be a part of my students' literacy development!
