My Students

We are very busy every day in our little Library! With our Pre-K thru 6th graders, I do everything I can to encourage student to read. Our students love books, and I would love for them to be able to relax and read! Research shows children read more if they can snuggle up in their own little nook.

We are a high poverty school where all of our students receive free meals.

Our student population is from tough economic situations and many of our students only eat regular meals at school. We also have about 30% English Language Learners from all over the world. All kids love to read and look at books. I try to support any kind of reading, and push students to build their reading skills. I try to offer our students lots of resources, books, and activities, but it all costs money. Sadly many of our students will rarely, if ever, see the inside of a public library. I try to do whatever I can to create a welcoming and safe environment for all of our students.

My Project

Students sit in hard chairs at desks all day and I would be thrilled for them to come in, "hang out", relax and read! Our students love soft seating, in contrast to sitting on hard chairs at desks. We have no budget for these, and we really need to replace our terribly worn out bean bag chairs. Seam are split, stuffing compressed, stained, just ready to be replaced. New chairs would offer flexible seating, easy to move and clean. They would probably last longer too, with better construction! Nice and bright blue!!!

I would love 5 bright blue, soft floor chairs to spread around our Library for our students to enjoy!

Research shows that students actually read MORE when they can relax and find a quiet spot to sit! Reading more, in a fun and relaxing environment, would really benefit ALL our students. Many come from families with serious problems, and relaxation and time to read is something they don't experience much at home. Please help our students get excited about hanging out and READING! Thank you!!!
