My Students

Within my school, almost 90% of students live in poverty. While the school has initiatives that provide students with free breakfast, lunch, snacks, and weekend food bags, many students are unable to come to school with supplies and spend time in classrooms that are not fully equipped with necessary materials.

My fourth graders are resilient individuals who face many challenges when they leave school; although there are a variety of trials in the world, our classroom is a place of solace and success.

Fourth grade is a time where students have deep, clear feelings about school and the world around them - and they let those feelings be known! They are learners who dive into rigorous academic content and require a comfortable, predictable learning environment.

Every student deserves a quality education, and my fourth graders are no exception. They are kind, capable learners who amaze me by what they accomplish daily and throughout the school year.

My students deserve a classroom environment equipped with adequate materials that help them receive a quality education.

My Project

In my classroom, all of the seating consists of traditional desks. Flexible seating has not been on my radar as a first year teacher, simply because I have not had the funds to begin the undertaking that flexible seating requires. With that being said, lap desks are an awesome alternative to regular desks to help students learn while being comfortable and tidy.

The lap desks will provide my students a simple alternative to desk seating that creates a spacious work area while Lysol wipes will allow us to keep these lap desks and other work spaces clean.

Math and language arts instruction is done almost exclusively through stations in our classroom because students receive individualized instruction and are given opportunities to interact with their peers. I try to have my students spread out across the room during stations, but sometimes glue and other supplies needed for station assignments restrict my students from working on the carpet because of the mess created.

With these requested items during station work, my students could grab a lap desk and work on the carpet while still having a defined work area. If students need a break from their desks during instruction, they can come grab a lap desk and bring it to our classroom carpet, instead of sprawling out on the carpet with glue and other messy supplies touching the floor. The possibilities with these lap desks are endless, and I can't wait to see the impact that they have on student learning in my classroom. My students and I thank you in advance!
