Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school serves almost 600 New York City students. 94% of the population are minority students. 80% qualify for free or reduced lunch and 30% are students with disabilities and English Language Learners.

Absenteeism in school is often directly linked to high poverty.

57% of our students missed more than 18 days of school last year. My goal this year is to ensure that all my students have 90% or better attendance. The first step to reaching this is goal is to ensure that they have their basic needs met by equipping them essential items needed to come to school throughout the school year, especially during bad weather when absenteeism rises. Students often don't come to school because they are embarrassed about what they do not have and are afraid to venture out in bad weather because they own the necessities to fight the weather. These items that we often take for granted are luxury items to them.

My Project

Regardless of the weather, New York City schools rarely close but all too often students living in poverty do not attend on bad weather days. They simply do not brave the weather conditions because they do not own the items needed to fight the elements of winter. Bad weather days often result in high absenteeism. I want to make sure my students have the necessary items to get to school each and every day regardless of the weather. Gloves, hats, heavy socks, ponchos, and umbrellas will be a great start in getting them into school when the weather is cooperating! My student leaders will use these weather related items and will distribute them to the less fortunate students to them that even though they might live in temporary housing shelters and/or below the poverty line we we have confidence in their abilities to succeed and that their participation in the school is needed so the whole community can thrive.
