I am a Fifth grade teacher at Chinquapin Elementary School. We are part of a small rural community near the North Carolina coast. I teach approximately 65 students every year. Weather is an important part of the North Carolina Science Curriculum. Many of my students do not have access to common weather instruments. In class we explore how to measure the weather conditions and use the data collected to determine patterns in the local weather and climate. The requested materials will give students hands-on experience with weather processes. The clouds poster will help students identify the different types of clouds and the conditions that are associated with each kind. The portable weather instruments will help students measure the temperature, air pressure, and humidity outside. Finally, the water cycle model will help students understand how water travels through the environment causing changes in our weather. Students in my class are required to take a state standardized test in Science. I know that the students will love exploring weather through the activities in this project. Further, by interacting with these weather materials, students will have a much better understanding of the processes involved in weather and will be more successful on their End-of-Grade test. You can help students become motivated to learn Science by giving them the materials needed for this project.
