I work at a school where approximately 50% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. We have science kits that are shared district-wide. We usually receive our science kits from the district 2 to 3 weeks into the start of each trimester. We then keep our kits for the remainder of the trimester. I have found that this amount of time has been insufficient to provide my 5th grade students with a thorough understanding of weather and all its components. I want to put together a weather unit using a variety of resources. In the unit, my students will learn about water supplies, the ocean, the climate, the atmosphere and air pressure, clouds, and various extreme weather systems. My unit includes the use of DVD's and web-based research and involves hands-on investigations. This unit will be used in conjunction with my district science kit. However, my unit will allow my students to investigate weather phenomena that interest them throughout the year. This unit will help my students have a more thorough understanding of weather. I will be teaching Science for two 5th grade classes, with a total of 65 students.
