Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have started the first year of the Young Entrepreneur's Club for D. S. Academy. Our public charter school is an eclectic mix of middle and high school students working hard to overcome obstacles and to achieve success regardless of their personal situations. Most of them are children of parents who are not citizens so they face many educational barriers.

Almost 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced price meals.

We have a 0% drop-out rate and a 100% college acceptance rate. Our dedicated staff takes personal interest in helping our students succeed not only academically but socially and emotionally as well. It is our goal to produce well-balanced, productive young adults that have the tools they need to be responsible, contributing members of society.

My Project

We fail our students by not having a formal class taught with regularity concerning financial matters. My students come from low-income backgrounds and without having a formal financial class, I am afraid my students cannot elevate themselves financially into adulthood.

Financial Literacy is essential for our kids to have a good understanding of when they get ready to go into college or into life.

For example, "Sell or be Sold" will help my students understand the concept of sales in order to provide residual income. I want to provide my class with as much reference material as possible so that I can be a more effective teacher in these areas for them.
