We need pillows, bean bags, and a rug. My students need a comfortable reading nook in my classroom so they may have a place to go so they may read and relax for uninterrupted increments of time.

My Students

My students are gifted and talented students that come from New York. They are bright and and love to learn through the content areas. I would love for them to have a special place where they can read through their books and material.

My gifted students take such pride in their learning environment and we spend a great deal of time in our classroom together.

Social-emotionally, gifted students enjoy their time with self exploration and independent projects that gear to their interests. If my students would like to go and explore a topic, I would like them to have access to the nook so they can get comfortable and have time away to assist them in their focus.

Mostly, students work in groups at their tables and engage in reciprocal forms of teaching with their peers, with me being the facilitator. The reading nook would create an area that's theirs for reading, geared more towards their independent outlet for learning. In addition, they will gain a fresh perspective of learning in a new space within the classroom.

My Project

During the school year, what I enjoy most when looking out over my classroom is when my students are strewn about the room working with their partners on the carpet or reading nicely with their friends around the classroom. I would like to create a special reading area, with flexible seating and comfort, so the children will be encouraged to pick up a book that interests them and go there to read it, uninterrupted.

I hope to continue to foster a love of reading in my classroom with this new reading nook.

Literacy is the center of much of my instruction and through the areas of fiction and nonfiction, I like to pique students' interests by having a diverse library, special book shopping days and now I would like a special area allocated for Dropping Everything And Read. This will surely be a special area that all students will get to enjoy and benefit from.
