My Students

Can you learn what it is like to work in a lab out of a book? My students are in a vocational lab course, and they need hands-on materials to explore in the ways that real researchers do.

We are large suburban high school with a wide variety of opportunities for students.

We are socioeconomically and culturally diverse, and becoming more so every year. With a campus of 3000 students with varying backgrounds, interests, and needs, the challenge is to offer opportunities for students to individualize their high school experience. To this end, we have a variety of course offerings, support programs and extracurricular activities

My Project

These materials will not only allow my students to familiarize themselves with a classical model organism, but to perform an experiment that involves cutting-edge science: RNA interference. They will grow and observe C. Elegans, a tiny worm, in petri dishes. Then they will explore one aspect of the complexity of genetic messages by "turning off" a gene using RNA, a molecule closely related to DNA.

Students read stories of research breakthroughs accomplished with the help of the 1 mm long nematode C.

Elegans, but only working with the worm itself will make it real for my students. Perhaps we have a future geneticist in my classroom.
