My Students

In our music classroom, we start every class by making music together. Depending on our topic, we get to our instruments and begin to jam or sing a song. There is no lack of engagement or joy on my students' faces as we perform together. Music helps us find ourselves, be social and communicate.

100% of my students have disabilities including developmental disorders, intellectual disabilities and multiple disabilities.

Many of our students are English Language Learners as well. Students have walked into my room having never had the opportunity to touch an instrument before, but when they come to music now, they are "the music makers" and they are "the dreamers of dreams". All of my students are fantastic, amazing, music-making, creative, wonderful people who enjoy coming to music class and expressing themselves. They are ALL rock stars. Our school is a school for Students with Disabilities in the NYC Department of Education. Our school fosters a culture of support, cooperation, community and learning.

My Project

The items I have requested through DonorsChoose.org will greatly impact the students in my music program. The keyboards and surge protector will replace keyboards that are damaged and not working. The headphones and headphone adapters will enable my students to practice independently and to help them actively listen while practicing. The pick punch will help me cut back the cost on buying new guitar picks all the time. I can use donated, used gift cards and old credit/ID cards to punch out new guitar picks. The amplifier will allow me to have more students involved in the band. I am only able to have as many students in the band as I have amplifiers for them to be heard! Our band students perform two to three times a year for their peers, teachers, school community members and parents. Last year we played songs like "I Got a Feeling" by the Black Eyed Peas, a rock version of the Wagner bridal chorus, and "Thank You" by Sly and the Family Stone.

This project will give more of my students access to instrumental music education.

It will increase social interaction between students and provide more opportunities for improving self-esteem. My students will have new found confidence and pride when they play on their new instruments. Thank you so much for your contribution and for reading about my amazing music students!
