My Students

My students are energetic and creative. They love coming to music class twice a week. We're a Title I school with many musical opportunities. We have an after-school choir, an after-school world music drumming ensemble, band and orchestra. Students have opportunities to perform for families and the community at least once a year.

Music gives my students a creative outlet during their day.

They are often in the driver's seat of their class. The students decide where to take a lesson and how to improve their musicianship as individuals or as a class. They have opportunities to try new things in a supportive atmosphere and can refine their musicianship in areas they feel they are strong.

My Project

World Music Drumming is a huge part of our music curriculum. The donno is a drum that has been used for communication for hundreds of years by people who live in northern Ghana. It is still used widely in Ghana, with children learning to play poetry on these drums as early as seven years of age.

I want to show my students the world through the art of music!

I want them to discover how music impacts the lives of children from around the globe. These talking drums will help my students learn to play music from Ghana. They will learn about why and how the Akan and Dagomba tribes in Ghana use these drums and why it is such an important instrument to these people. When my students play the donno, they will practice improvising and responding to a musical cue, both important standards in my district's elementary music curriculum.
