Simple machines aren't so simple to learn about if you don't have the resources! Our class is faced with the challenge of learning about simple machines and we do not have any models or books!
My students are first graders living in a major urban city in New York State.
We are an elementary school that has many different kinds of cultures and backgrounds to enjoy. My classroom has at least 6 different ethnic backgrounds. My students enjoy being exposed to new things. They love books and learning to read. They love being given the opportunity to be independent. We try to have as many hands-on activities as possible. They learn their best when being active and engaged!
The physical science books and simple machine models will provide us with hands on materials to touch and learn from. We can read about each simple machine with the books and then get busy using one immediately. The wooden models are going to be a terrific resource for this classroom for years to come because they are well made and can stand up to the children's use. The children will meet the first grade state standards for learning about simple machines in a fun and interesting way!
This project is so important because it is an essential lesson in machine basics.
The children need a general base knowledge to continue their science learning. This will provide us with the basic understanding. The students will learn the basic concepts to continue learning. This project will benefit many more children than just my classroom. Our school has four first grades and we will share these resources to reach more children.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
