My Students

A typical day in my classroom starts with intervention to help students who are struggling with specific reading and/or math skills. This is followed by a 2 hour literacy block, during which I teach and model, and students practice, reading and writing skills.

My school is comprised of a diverse group of students, with students from many countries and with varying levels of English proficiency.

In a typical year, approximately 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, qualifying our school as a Title 1 school. I teach kindergarten. My class contains students who range from native-English speakers to newcomers, and my students vary in their readiness for kindergarten. My school is a small school, and I'm grateful for the sense of community we've developed. We truly consider all of our students to be a part of our school family, and we strive to involve the community as much as possible.

My Project

I want to encourage students to develop independent reading skills, because reading success is directly correlated to the amount of time students spend reading. I want to give students the skills to read on their own when they do not have anyone around to help them. I teach my new kindergarten students to start by reading the pictures in a book, while we work to develop the skills required to read the words. I teach and model, and my students practice these skills in class. I allow students to choose different places in the classroom where they feel comfortable reading. I know they would love having bean bag chairs among their seating choices! I would like to have a book bin for each student to store his or her book selections, so that my students can easily grab their own bins and start reading. This would cut down on transition time, maximizing reading and instructional time.

Early reading skills are critical for academic success.

When students struggle with reading, they struggle with other subject areas. I want to start my kindergarten students off with a firm foundation in reading, so that they have the best chance to become strong students in future years. By helping students develop their independent reading skills and their sense that reading is fun, donors will impact my students' academic success and choices in life.
