My Students

Second graders love to read & I love to read to them. I teach in a Title 1 School, where students from many diverse backgrounds come to explore, engage, & learn about the world around them.

My students are curious about everything!

They want to know about people, places, and especially animals. There is no better place for them to learn about their interests than in books. Not only do they learn about exciting people & events, but they also learn about caring about, and encouraging, each other.

My school has almost 200 ELL students. The students love to learn about the places their families are from and sharing with each other wonderful family stories and traditions.

I am truly blessed to work with such remarkable children every day.

My Project

As students learn reading and writing skills and how to apply them while reading, my wish is for my students to have access to more than just textbooks. I’d like to be able to show them how a real author uses different story elements in the books they wrote. These texts are called Mentor texts. They can be used to teach just about any lesson you can think of. They model many standards, from reading, to writing, science, social studies, and yes, sometimes even math!

Throughout our day, I like to give students the opportunity to learn from Mentor Texts, so they can see how authors use different writing skills in their books or to practice reading strategies in real books.

These Mentor Texts will give my students the opportunity to think about how they may use their learned strategies in their own work. Helping students take risks and try out new things after seeing real world examples is the goal of using Mentor Texts.

We will be using these texts during reading and writing workshop to serve as examples of the skills we are learning. The books on my Wishlist contain materials for some of my favorite lessons on fascinating people from history, comparing and contrasting different versions of fairytales and folktales, as well as helping my students become supportive friends of each other.
