Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My fifth grade students are in need of a functional classroom library. Our current library space consists of many broken book bins, overflowing shelves, and damaged chairs. While we are fortunate to receive many book donations, we do not have the funds to properly house and display these texts. Since all 85 fifth graders cycle through my classroom each day, our materials see A LOT of action. There is no question that improvements are necessary to keep this little library alive!

At my diverse school in South Philadelphia, over 40% of students are learning English as a Second Language (ESL).

To encourage language development and love of literature, it is crucial that these students have access to a library that is well organized, comfortable, and inviting. Unfortunately, the school's library is no longer accessible, as it was converted into a classroom due to space shortage and our growing ESL population. Currently, students use my library during small group rotations, independent reading time, and even during their coveted "Freebie Friday" time. Because of this, my students need quality book bins, displays, and additional seating.

Lastly, my school district has recently revised our reading curriculum to include texts that better represent our diverse student population. Each novel that we read in fifth grade centers around a character of a different race or culture who struggles with defining their identity. It is my dream to use new book displays to highlight supplemental texts that broaden my students' perspectives on acceptance and inclusion. I am hopeful that these upgrades will help my students personally connect with literature and inspire them to become lifelong readers.
