My Students

Our school is on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, but my students come from all over New York City. We are one of the most sought after non-selective college prep high schools. My students are college-bound 12th graders who have read a variety of literature in their English classes. They live in a city teeming with living authors who write stories about families and neighborhoods like their own.

My seniors are about to embark on the next stage of their lives--almost all will be headed to college.

My Project

My students have been reading a rich and diverse collection of American and global authors throughout their high school English classes. This spring they will have the opportunity to read Angie Cruz's brand new book, "Dominicana." The novel is loosely based on her mother's experiences of emigrating from the Dominican Republic to the New York City neighborhood of Washington Heights in the late 1960s. Our students who are of predominantly Latino, black and Caribbean backgrounds will have the amazing experience of seeing their lives and their family members' lives reflected back to them from the pages of a literary work.
