My Students

I teach in a Title I Middle School. My students all have some learning disability or other impairment that interferes with their success in school.

My students are adolescents with all the developmental issues that accompany the early teen years with the added stress and self-consciousness of learning difficulties.

These students do not typically have lots of resources at home and do not enjoy reading. Research shows how time spent reading improves reading ability and success in school. Furthermore, being academically successful decreases the likelihood of dropping out of High School.

My Project

These books will provide my students with materials that they can read and want to read. We picked out the books as a class so I know they are of interest to my students.

They are looking forward to getting the books, and I hope the excitement will improve their motivation to read.

Having a classroom library will allow me to let them check out books to take home. This is important because my students do not often have books at home to read. Furthermore, many times they are not allowed to check out books from the school library due to lost books and past fines.
