My Students
My sixth graders are just entering middle school, coming from extremely varied experiences at nine different elementary schools.
I want to give my students tools to help them better adapt to our unusual learning environment this year, and make them more comfortable while following all necessary safety precautions.
These students are excited about learning science in a classroom that is centered around their needs and interests. Although this is a strange year, my students deserve to have meaningful, memorable experiences in science this year. Thank you for your support of science education!
My Project
My science classroom is built around my middle schoolers' need to move and engage with science topics. In a world of COVID-19 restrictions, I need ways to keep students moving in our classroom. Sixth graders are still developing their motor skills and experiencing growth spurts that affect coordination. Many students have trouble paying attention to lessons if they have to sit still for 45 minutes a class, 8 times a day.
Child development science has proven that movement is essential to adolescent brain development.
Providing purposeful movement opportunities goes a long way to encourage movement and minimize distractions and outbursts in the classroom.
Elastic chair bands will allow students to bounce their feet and keep their legs moving while remaining seated for longer periods during a lesson. A variety of easy-to-sanitize fidget toys will help students keep their hands busy between classroom activities. Floor cushions will allow students to work in different areas of the classroom while maintaining social distance and not sitting on unsanitary floors.
