My Students

Do you remember PE in elementary, middle and high school? I do, and I loved it! It was a great experience because my teacher invested in us and cared about our interests. She used what she knew about us to help motivate us to move and keep active...and I'm still active today!

My students range in age from 3-21.

They attend one of the seven public schools I service as an Adapted PE Teacher. Just like any child, they love to play! Many of my students are in special day classes with other students with (dis)abilities. My students love coming to PE and are eager to get moving. Our class is very structured and we work on several areas of physical fitness. My students all have their own strengths and pose different challenges in the PE class setting. Some students have a hard time understanding the concept, some are unable to physically perform tasks, and other are physically and cognitively capable but are not able to safely participate in PE with general education students. My students are not defined by these titles, but their disabilities include: Intellectual Disabilities, Developmental Delay, Autism, Orthopedic Impairments, and Specific Learning Disabilities.

My Project

We would like a wireless/cordless speaker that will allow us to move to music on the school yard during our adapted PE classes. On the yard there is no access to electrical outlets, which means...no music! Music motivates my students to move. When we have the opportunity to use an indoor space the music lights my students up in an unbelievable way. It is such a easy and positive way to get students active. As a teacher it is my goal to instill in my students a love for learning, and in my case, a love for physical activity. What happens when they are no longer in school? Will they still dance, exercise and play? This is what worries me. I am trying my best to develop and instill a love for fitness, and music is a great way to do that. Music is all around us...and it's accessible to everyone! We have the music, we just need to be able to play it in our classroom....the yard!

Students with disabilities lack the motivation to work out and improve their own physical fitness.

I'd love to use technology to motivate them to get up and move! Often we as teachers use edible re-enforcers, but in my students case, it adds to the problem of obesity! Music motivates in an even more powerful way. Music can be incorporated into many aspects of health and fitness including dance, circuit training, aerobics, running etc.
