Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom involves 21 VERY fidgety students who want and need to learn as much as they want and need to move!

My students have an immense amount potential, they just need significant help getting there.

Our school is a Title I school, which indicates that we have a large population of students coming from low-income homes. Every day, I see students arrive at school from broken homes, shelters, and public housing. Some share a one bedroom apartment with 5 or 6 people. Their meals are often provided through a meager food stamp budget, or the free breakfast and lunch provided at the school. With so much stress going on in the home, it can be hard to be completely engaged at school, especially when you are struggling with a learning disability. Many of my students are more than a year below grade level in reading, writing, and math. It is vital that we use every available resource to improve academic success. This is why my students need creative and innovative ways to keep them focused!

My Project

These seat cushions will completely transform my classroom. Every student in my class can be described as hyperactive, and they struggle with maintaining attention. As a result, I have a lot of students sitting up in their chairs, moving their body around, or asking to get up and walk around the classroom A LOT. This is not because they're trying to misbehave, but because they literally need to move at all times. I have been thinking about getting these for my classroom for a while, and I would be so excited if my students were able to use them! They would use these seat cushions all day long! These would give their bodies a chance to move, keeping that blood pumping to their growing brain, while remaining at their seats and on task. As adults, we have a hard time sitting in a hard chair all day long, so why are we expecting nine-year-olds to do it? I am positive that this will increase attention, which will increase academic success, in my special needs classroom!

This project would make a huge difference in the lives of twenty-one 4th graders!

Imagine this: A nine-year-old looking forward to sitting in a chair and learning all day long! I have researched this strategy, and so many teachers have claimed that it works wonders for students with attention difficulties! My students are so determined, but this quality is quickly lost behind insurmountable obstacles, attention-span being number one. Help me eliminate this problem, so my students can succeed!
