Amazing sounds are coming from the Inner City! I teach twenty third to fifth grade students guitar in an after school guitar program in urban Southern California. A non-profit music organization has given us guitars to start with, but we would like to spice our program up with amps for electric guitars and a bass guitar. Some of our students are good enough at the elementary level to play lead guitar. One of our students can play the intro to “Black Magic Woman,” and has learned the lead for other songs. It is unfortunate that their neighborhood is filled with negative influences. Guitar class is the only positive thing some of these kids look forward to. Some of these kids go home to no food or no parent present, or stay in the after school program until 6 pm. We want to make sure that these kids have a good foundation and develop a love for music.

Our students are mostly first generation immigrants of Latino heritage. We also have a few African-American students. Our school is a Title One school and 95% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. Since the budget cuts, we have had no music program. We are trying to encourage these students to get a good education through music. We are writing songs about college and about saving the planet. Through the generous donation of our time and a non-profit music organization, we have acoustic guitars, but no electric guitars, basses, amps, etc. We hope to make our guitar club a real band by adding these elements.

Our students need a bass guitar, an amp, and a few instrument cables to plug into the amp. If we, the teachers, hadn’t attended training and given our time to get free instruments, most of these students would have never been exposed to music. The fact is the school district demands teachers to cut art and music out of the curriculum first. Because of that, we have to have a class after school. We have spent our own money on picks and buy extra strings. We got a donation of straps and finally a donation of strap buttons. We need your help to encourage the kids to keep playing. We want the students to perform live and stand up like real musicians and rock out! We want them to love music and learn all they can.

The future Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, and Sheryl Crow may be standing in our classroom. We also have a lot of girls interested in playing guitar and even one who plays bass. We need a bass to keep the beat and an amp to make sure these kids are heard. We are performing in front of our entire school and want to perform at other schools, so we need to ensure that we have the proper equipment to make our students shine. Your help will allow our students to succeed with their musical abilities. Your help will transform our acoustic guitar club into an electric guitar club. You will make it possible for the teachers, who are volunteers after school, to teach guitar classes with greater ease. You will also make a difference in these student’s lives and future. Your generous donation will make our guitar program beyond successful.
