Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
"My pencil lead broke!" "May I sharpen my pencil?" How many times do I hear that during the course of my day? Too many! Yes! I do have a pencil sharpener in my room: the kind that has a handle and you turn, and turn, and turn! Remember those??
I teach general music in a high poverty inner city public school in Indiana.
Our school has almost 800 students who love the arts! More than 500 students walk into my Music room twice a week. They are curious, enthusiastic, hard-working, and respectful. They come to Music willing to sing a new song, learn a folk dance, play a rhythm instrument, compose a melody, choreograph movement to a song, write a rap, work on a composer project, take tests, and write thank you letters to donors from DonorsChoose! For many of these activities, we need pencils, preferably, well-sharpened ones!
My Project
The kids work hard for me and I work hard for them! I have always recognized their accomplishments and achievements by giving them certificates. I design new certificates yearly, print them on brightly colored paper that a generous donor from Donors Choose has given us! I write each name in calligraphy with a gold marker, and place a gold seal on the award. I make certificates for students who participate in choir, bell choir, and folk dance! Every student has the opportunity to earn a "Music Leader Award." Many of the certificates also have the child's picture on it! The final touch is laminating each award so that it will become a lifetime memory for each student. Many times the photos, the paper frames, and the certificates need a little trimming! A small paper trimmer would be the perfect tool to help us do some trimming!
The pencil sharpener will help make sure pencils are ready when we need them!
The 12" paper trimmer will be located in my room so that it will be handy. It will save me precious minutes which I could be using to prepare for my next class! Having 10 classes a day leaves me little time to do these "extra" things for my students! My kids could sharpen their own pencils and the 7th and 8th graders could learn to use the 12" paper trimmer! Thank you for considering my proposal to always B# in Music!
