We Need The Write Stuff!

My students need paper, pencils, highlighters, notebooks, folders, and a pencil sharpener to finish out the school year on the "write" note.

My Students

CLOSE reading requires a ton of paper and our highlighters are running dry. We love to print our published writing for our portfolios. The CLOSE reading strategy is helping us meet the Common Core standards for Reading but our supplies are running low.

Our school is a Title I School with limited resources.

My students live in an urban community that struggles with drugs, violence, and poverty. Coming to school is a respite from the world outside. This is a sixth grade classroom that is struggling to keep up with our suburban counterparts. We are working hard to meet the demands of the Common Core without a curriculum. As a result, many copies are made and many notes are being taken from our SMART Board. They do not have the resources to replenish school supplies in the middle of the year because they are struggling to make ends meet in their daily lives.

My Project

My students will use the copy paper to print stories, articles, activities, and writing samples from their email drive account. They will use the CLOSE reading strategy to mark the text with highlighters. We cannot mark the text in novels or magazines so we make a ton of copies. The folders will keep these copies organized. The notebooks will be used to take notes and respond to writing assignments. Our published writing needs to be printed to put in our portfolios for the next grade and to celebrate our writing on bulletin boards around the building. These items are necessary to continue to keep up on our reading and writing until the end of the school year. We have exhausted our school supplies and my personal supplies.

My students deserve the same advantages in education as everyone else.

Unfortunately our school budget is very limited and we have not purchased a new curriculum to meet the demands of the Common Core standards. As a result, the only materials available to use are from teacher websites and are printed for the classroom. The Common Core standards are tested through benchmarks and standardized testing. My students deserve to do well despite the disadvantages they face at school and home.
