Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Dr. Seuss is a must read for everyone. Whenever I borrow a copy from the library my students are thrilled. His books often lead to incredible classroom discussions about serious issues like the environment, conflict and responsibility.

We are a class of 96% beginning to intermediate ESL students with a focus and passion to learn and create.

My hope is that I can guide my students and continue developing their love for books and school. Our resources are limited, and we need your help. This is a second grade class that is located in New York City. The students come from low income housing and have extremely limited resources. Our elementary school has grades K-4 and houses over 1,100 students. Quality books have become difficult to acquire.

My Project

I am asking for certain Dr. Seuss books so that I can utilize them as mentor texts and read alouds when teaching my students. This coming year my school has four reading units dedicated to partnership reading and I want to teach them how to retell, identify the story elements and most importantly express their thoughts about the books to their reading partners. Dr. Seuss books always encourage the greatest and longest classroom discussions between reading partners. Students actually get angry about the endings to books like The Butter Battle Book and The Lorax. It's wonderful to hear them express that anger and to hear their classmates respond with evidence from the text.

The focus for the 2012-2013 school year will be book conversations.

I can think of nothing greater than reading a great book and just bursting at the idea of talking about that book with someone who has also read it. These books will inspire students to read, share ideas, theories, grow as readers and develop social skills through conversation. I can teach them all of these skills but I can't do it without your generous support.
