My Students

The world is changing all around us, but we don't have the financial resources to keep up with the technology. We need to be exposed to the same types of technology as students in higher socio-economic areas.

This year I have 28 students (33 in my math group).

We are a diverse group of learners at a public school that has just qualified for Title One assistance. At this point we do not receive full title funding, as we are working on our Title One plan. 18% of my class would be identified as English Language learners. Almost half of our school population qualifies for free or reduced lunch. Almost one third of my class receives special services.

My Project

My students love to practice math facts and other skills on my iphone. I have downloaded many free applications that provide great math practice in a game type format. Unfortunately, I only have one phone and the battery is consumed quickly. Getting two ipod touches would allow two additional students to practice independently. The variety of applications available is fantastic, I even have my English Language Learners working on vocabulary and numeration skills. When I have more resources, I'm sure I will be able to find more ways (not just math and vocabulary) for students to use these new gadgets!

The best thing about the ipod is that new applications are constantly being created!

There is no end in sight to what will be available to my students if they have access to this technology. AND, using a hand-held device they think they are just playing games.
