This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have really opened up my eyes.

MY STUDENTS HAVE TRANSFORMED INTO BOOKWORMS!

When I entered the classroom, my students were mostly two years behind in reading. They had very little interest in reading a book. But as the year progressed, they were allowed to take books from the classroom library home, thus blossoming their love for reading. Now I can't get my students out of the library.

I have so many students taking, pulling and reading books in the library. I even had one student who returned two shopping bags full of books back to school because every night she was taking home two or three books to read but often forgot to bring them back to school. They are reading so much that half of my class has surpassed the reading goal for this year. Of those who have not reached grade level, one third of those students are almost there.

My Project

These books will add to the classroom library. My current library is filled with books, but after nine years of teaching, many of the books have endured wear and tear.

Adding these books to the library will also update the classroom library with current books.

Many of the titles I have selected were the books that the students highlighted that they were of interest. Many of the students saw these books at the school book fair but were unable to buy due to circumstances beyond their control. I would love to give them the opportunity to read these books within their own classroom.

Lastly, these books will continue to foster conversation around reading. It will help to take the students on new adventures outside of their current reality.
