Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 25 of the most amazing 4th graders who are a perfect mixture of general education and ELL students. One thing that makes our school unique is that we are a universal poverty school, so all students are entitled to free meals. We have breakfast in the class, lunch, and many students stay after school so they can have dinner as well. We are in a very rough neighborhood, but my kiddos don't give up!

Unfortunately, many of our students are below grade level by more than one grade level.

This is because have to be grown ups after school, not kids. They have to take care of little brothers and sisters while their parents work multiple jobs. They don't have the time to study. I don't like to make excuses, but literally, life is in their way.

My Project

Technology is moving forward fast, but unfortunately schools are unable to keep up with the pace due to how fast it changes and cost issues. I am lucky enough to have a set of functioning netbooks in my class. I want to do more with instructional technology, but I am limited to the software (MICROSOFT) on my computers. I need an outlet to do more.

They do so much work that I would like to use, develop, and share by hand that would be great in presentations or learning slides, but I can't get it from the paper to the computer.

A portable color scanner would allow me to do just that. And not just in my room, other teachers could borrow it because it is portable. We could share this technology to make student produced work truly instructional and meaning.

Imagine all your hard work instantly digitized and used as a teaching tool or to show your understanding of subject area materials. Your artwork captured into a digital collection. Your writing used to model how to correctly use dialogue in a paragraph. Your sketches captured and used to show your understanding of fractions or geometry. This portable color scanner is the instructional technology needed to move my class to the next level.
