My Students

I teach first grade at a Title I school in West Harlem. Most of my students come from low-income families. My students are bright, motivated, and passionate learners. They are inquisitive children that devour anything and everything that piques their interest!

In my classroom, children's questions and interests drive the instruction.

This year I have a hungry group! They can't eat enough! We have used cooking throughout the year to learn about the everything from the different cultures in our classroom and family traditions to immigration and writing how-to books. When they asked to turn our classroom into a pizza restaurant, I enthusiastically said "YES!" What amazing learning could happen through this process!

My Project

My first graders are in the process of opening a pizzeria in our classroom! This process creates endless learning opportunities. In math, children learn about measurement through making pizza dough and sauce. They learn about addition and subtraction through creating receipts and making change. Children learn about fractions by cutting pizzas to create equal shares for their customers. In science, children learn about the seasonality of food and plan their menu according to what's available at our local farmers' market. We plant and harvest herbs in our classroom to use in the sauce. We also learn some basic food chemistry by exploring how bubbles help us cook.

We can't open our restaurant without your help!

We need a large roll of paper and tape to transform our classroom and give it the ambiance of a real pizzeria. We need construction paper, folders with clear fronts and laminating sheets to create menus, table numbers, and advertisements. We need wooden trays to deliver food from our "kitchen" to our customers.
