My Students

Our school is a Title I public charter school serving diverse families in Los Angeles. My students are curious fourth graders excited to learn about their community, science, art, and the many different experiences that make up California history.

My 4th grade students represent a range of socioeconomic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.

My library should reflect the true diversity of students in my classroom - with books whose characters look like them and share similar experiences.

To accommodate the diverse learning styles in my classroom, I'm also working towards integrating more opportunities for experiential learning. Math games and hands on activities great ways to get students excited about learning math!

My Project

During our reading block, students read books aligned to the unit of study we are learning about. I've selected a variety of books that will make my library more robust with interesting texts for ALL students to read.

It's especially important that I stock my classroom library with diverse books at various reading levels that are engaging, culturally relevant, and rigorous.

I’m asking for books in sets so that students can read in partnerships or small groups to support one another with their learning.

Other materials, like playing cards, dice, and board games enable my students to play Math games. Games like Multiplication Bingo or Prime Climb make math learning more joyful and engaging. At the same time, these activities help my students practice their math skills in an authentic context!
