This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember when Goldilocks went inside the house of the three bears and had a difficult time finding a chair that was just right? That's how my students feel when they come to sit down for groups. "This chair's too low; my nose is lower than the table!" "This chair's too high and broken, ouch!"

I work at a tiny reclaimed mortuary turned inner-city charter school nestled underneath a freeway bridge.

We don't have a parking lot, a cafeteria, a library, or many other resources that most American schools have, but we do have a staff full of energetic teachers willing to help our students learn. My students are 22 fantastic first graders that are a constant source of entertainment and inspiration. We sing songs all day long, have dance parties, put on classroom plays, and learn about exciting math topics like long division!

My Project

We have a kidney shaped table in the back of our classroom that we use for group time. We currently have 5 chairs (all in different sizes and physical conditions) at our kidney table, but our small group size consists of 7 or 8 students per group. Group time is like musical chairs with students running and pushing to get a chance to sit in our one non-broken appropriately sized chair. The remaining students either stand or bring over their teeny tiny preschool-sized chair from their desk. We would like to have a matching set of 8 new chairs so all of our students will have a place to sit.

A significant amount of learning time is lost from students fidgeting, fighting over, and falling out of their chairs.

If everyone has a nice chair to sit in, the students' ability to focus will improve and we'll have more time for learning.
