My students need more books! I love to implement literature circles in my classroom and good literature is essential for that. "In the Year of the Boar" and "Jackie Robinson", and "Holes" are just that.

My Students

I like to refer to my students as "my kids" because that is how I think of them. They are with me from 8:00-2:15, but they stay with me much longer. I often find myself thinking after school or on weekends, "Oh, he would really love that book, or she needs to visit this website on fixing electronics." I want to provide them with the best possible education and I don't want a lack of resources to hinder that possibility for them.

My school is located in South Los Angeles where 100% of the students receive free lunch.

Most of my students speak English as a second language but are now in a mainstream English classroom. They come from a variety of homes and economic backgrounds. I have some parents that are teachers, some that are construction workers, and some that work more than one job to make ends meet. What they all have in common is a desire to give their child the best education possible.

My Project

I love to read, and I love to see my students read and be transported into the story. I like to implement Literature Circles in my classroom. This allows the students to take responsibility for their learning and discuss their ideas and opinions about the book and its characters with their classmates. The titles I have chosen bring up issues that many of my students can relate to, which makes reading even more engaging.

In order to fully implement Literature Circles, you need good literature.

The 2 titles I have chosen are high interest to 5th graders, which will help nurture their love of books and reading that will last far beyond fifth grade.
