Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading is one of the most difficult tasks we ask a learning disabled child to complete. Many times, students in special education may be more than an academic year behind where they should be. This may be due to many factors, but we work to get past these and get them where they should be.

My students are in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades in a public elementary school in New York.

I teach what's called a "bridged" class. These students have been diagnosed as having one or more disabilities that affect their academic progress. This is why it is not uncommon for me to get 3rd graders reading on a Kindergarten level or 4th graders on a 1st grade level. Despite their setbacks, I work with my students throughout the year in order to get them reading closer to the academic grade they are actually in. Through shared readings, guided reading, independent reading and other strategies, my students usually live up to the task and many of them make more than a year's academic progress in reading by the end of the year.

My Project

I am requesting 11 sets of leveled reading books to read. I am asking for lower level books because I currently have only a few actual books on these levels in my classroom library. They are difficult to find in the upper grades (3-5). Usually students in 3rd to 5th grade are reading levels M - V. I am asking for A - G. What I have done this past year is to print out books through an on-line website. This has gotten too costly for me to continue throughout this school year. What's more, many times these books will be torn or the pages will fall out because they are just printer pages stapled together and are being passed around to the students week after week. Having actual library books will help because they are more durable and the students can see colorful pictures that will interest them more than black and white print-outs.

Having a more complete library will definitely help the students in my classroom to have all of the resources they need in order to achieve academic success.

The impact on their lives will be great. Imagine, where would you be if you couldn't read? What greater impact could you have than helping a child to be literate? Thank you!
