My Students

I teach at a small public charter school in central California; our entire student population is about 150 students. My students come from conservative families who chose to send their children to our school because of our unique set up: we offer onsite classes, online classes, and homeschooling support. However, we don't have a high school library. I don't have a classroom library either.

My students need to have access to books to grow their love of reading and experience worlds outside of their own.

According to George R. R. Martin in A Dance with Dragons, "A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. The man who never reads lives only one." I want to be able to provide those lives to live to my students.

I attended the California Association of Teachers of English (CATE) conference this February, and was able to hear Penny Kittle speak on empowering students through literacy. While our school has some diversity, most of the students home lives and experiences are fairly similar, and I would love to help them experience more of the world through diverse literature.

My Project

My students come from conservative homes. Many aren't allowed to read the Harry Potter books. While Harry Potter may not be considered classic literature (yet), it does teach readers important life lessons about love, loss, friendship, and justice. I want my students to have the ability to read books that help them learn those life lessons.

They don't know of many books outside of what is assigned in their classes. My district just adopted new ELA curriculum and it encourages students to make an independent reading list that complements the texts read in each unit. However, unfortunately, my students don't have access to a high school library. My school site is a K-12 site, so the whole school library caters more towards the elementary and middle schools. Therefore, my students and I would like to build a classroom library, and we are starting from the ground up. As a teacher in my first five years, I haven't been able to build up a classroom library yet. We want to start with 100 books and if this project goes well, then we would like to try for more in the future.
