My Students

Students in my class are inquisitive, boisterous, and anxious to learn...by doing! Textbooks serve their purpose, as does technology, but we try to fill our days with integrated projects that are high interest and require collaboration and communication.

The typical student in my class is very verbal, inquisitive, and very hands-on.

Their imaginations are only limited by the materials and experiences offered to them. Our school is a STEM school, (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), and we are fortunate enough to also be a Project Based Learning school where our days aren't spent reading about things, but by DOING them!

My Project

We are requesting binoculars to be able to study the wide array of birds that are in our school community. We are fortunate to be situated half a mile from the ocean and right next to a riparian corridor, a freshwater marsh, and a saltwater marsh. Our long term goal is to create field guides for the bird, animal, and plant life that is abundantly available to us. These binoculars will be used on walking field trips to the marshes as well as around the local area. They will help students focus and learn how to see things differently than they do with just with their eyes. What they see will then be sketched and improved upon through various drafts of scientific drawings. Students will then do research on these birds, plants, and animals and ultimately create pages for field guides that can be used for years to come! Please help us with this exciting project!

Creating these field guides will give a sense of involvement in the community and the environment that just reading about the subject could never do.

The fact that these field guides will live on in our school community also will help my students feel a part of the school community long after they move on to middle school, high school, and beyond! This is just the beginning of what we hope will be many such exciting projects!
