My Students

We live in a densely populated area of a large city that shares many of the challenges facing other cities of this size. As teachers, we are sensitive to the fact that many of our students struggle to get their basic needs met. All of our students receive free or reduced lunch and breakfast and many of our students are dealing with some kind of significant trauma. Our classroom is the primary age level (three- to six-year-olds) of a diverse Montessori public school. Our classroom is a safe environment designed to help us pursue our natural curiosities to learn as well as learn how to peacefully engage and grow with the members of our community.

My Project

My students enjoy making art projects. I am requesting paint, craft sticks, pom poms, feathers, paper, glitter cardstock, tape, scissors and finger paint to give my students the opportunity to express themselves through art. These craft items are just what my students need to express themselves creatively in our classroom. These materials can be used in many ways for lots of different art projects. The broom will be used by students to clean up after art projects.

The bright, variety of colors and textures in these materials allows children to develop their sensory skills, such as naming colors and observing different textures.

The three-finger pincer grip which is often required for picking up, placing, and gluing small objects onto paper allows the children the ability to strengthen their fingers in preparation for writing with a pencil. Children also strengthen their ability to concentrate and complete tasks by completing art crafts using these materials.
