My Project

Our elementary school is a diverse school in an urban community that serves students from many backgrounds. Each child brings with him or her unique strengths and needs. They are inquisitive and enthusiastic, and come to school ready to learn every day!

A favorite time in our classroom is small group time.

It is a chance for students to receive support and feedback across subject areas. In a bustling class, spending time in a small group of four or five students is a necessity to ensure scaffolded learning opportunities.

Our classroom currently has one group table, which is shared between myself and our diverse learners co-teacher. Because we need to share this space, we meet at the rug, which makes it difficult for me to reach students, see their work, and have a hard surface on which to write.

With a small group table, students would have an area to meet with one another and with myself or other teachers for focused learning. This table would give students a place to go and get started while their peers are getting to work on centers, and would allow me to easily check in on each child's progress. Further, this table would help students focus on their work and communicate more easily with classmates at the table during discussions about math or reading.
